7 compact cameras from Nikon
Tue, Jan 29, 2008
Today was Nikon’s turn to announce the future models of compact cameras, which are set to be on display at PMA 2008, next to the new D60.
Nikon COOLPIX P60

This camera, with a serious and cool look, places itself in the medium segment, thanks to its specs and settings it possesses. The combination between a 8 MP sensor and 5x optical zoom, is not spectacular, especially if it’s accompanied by a optical stabilizer system, through sensor movement. What’s remarkable, however, is the electric eyeball, which can prove to be a viable alternative to the 2.5″ LCD display, in a very sunny day. The photographs can be stored on SD or SDHC card, the camera being equipped with 12 MB worth of internal memory. Charging is made with the help of two AA batteries, and the camera’s weight is 160 grams.
Nikon COOLPIX S600

A metallic casing protects a 10 MP optical sensor and a 4x objective with a broad angle. The Vibration Reduction stabilizer system, acts against the sensor, to counter-react the sudden movements of the camera. The function control is made easy, with the help of small joystick, placed at the 2.7″ display’s right. Among other facilities, we can number focusing with priority on faces from pictures, macro mode from the distance of 3 cm between lenses and a internal memory of 47 MB. The estimated price is of 355 euros and the camera will be available from April.
Nikon COOLPIX S550

According to the producer, Nikon COOLPIX S550 is the thinnest compact with a 10 MP sensor and external objective with 5x zoom. Evidently, the 22mm dimensions can not be maintained, if it works on AA bateries, so in the package a Li-ion accumulator is included. What’s missing is the image stabilizer system, while the display ranges at 2.5″. The internal memory with which the COOLPIX S550 has been gifted is 50 MB, and the photo storage can be made on SD/SDHC cards.
Nikon COOLPIX S520

This compact camera is 22.5mm thick and weighs 115 grams. The 8 MP sensor is joined by a 3x zoom objective and a lens-shift optical stabilizer system. Also like any other models in its series, the cameras dispose of a negligible amount of internal memory. Charging is made via Li-ion accumulator, and the LCD display has the same dimensions as the COOLPIX S550 model.
Nikon COOLPIX S210

The elegant design of this model is contoured by aluminium/crom casing, as well as it’s 18 mm thickness. The specs related to sensor, objective and display are identical with the ones from S520. The maximum ISO value is 2000, but the focusing in macro mode can be made from a 10 cm distance of the lenses.
Nikon COOLPIX L16 and L18
The entry level segment is completed by Nikon with the L16 and L18 models, the first being equipped with a 7 MP sensor, while the second has a 8 MP one. The differences can also be observed in the case of the LCD display, COOLPIX L18 being advantaged by a 3″ diagonal, compared to the 2.5″ one of the L16. Besides that, the offered facilities are standard: 3x optical zoom, USB connectivity, support for SD cards and two AA battery supplying.

My girlfriend has a Nikon Coolpix S210, the high ISO modes are useless. To much noise, but what can you expect from such a tiny digital sensor…
