According to Strategy Analytics, Apple is yet once again on top of the smartphone market, where it never left actually since the release of the very first iPhone. Like in Q3, for Q4 2012 Apple has the two first places in both shipped units and market share with thanks to its iPhone4s and iPhone 5, respectively.

“Apple’s iPhone 5 smartphone model shipped an estimated 27.4 million units worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2012. The iPhone 5 captured an impressive 13 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the iPhone 5′s success. In addition to the iPhone 5, Apple shipped an estimated 17.4 million iPhone 4S units for 8 percent smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S are currently the world’s two most popular smartphone models,” said Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

A Minor Imperfection

This system is not perfect however. There are several reasons why data can corrupt on a RAID system. The well-known RAID1/5/6 data write-hole problem, which causes data errors to be propagated through a RAID array when a drive failure occurs; even if the failure is for a microsecond it can cause huge problems. The RAID process at reboot may pick this up; but what about unseen errors? These are hidden corruptions that can be caused by all manner of environmental or instantaneous changes that cause some bits to be written incorrectly. A portion of the drive surface or the gates of a Flash drive may be unstable in some way. They may appear fine to a disk check but when data is stored, there can be errors occurring. Very small errors but something very important that most computer professionals understand very well is that computing is and extremely exact science. A bit in the wrong place can cause catastrophic problems – imagine an air traffic control system that gets co-ordinates wrong for example. A bank might have such an error and lose millions when a decimal place is moved.

Unexpected Errors with Expected Results!

It might be supposed that the RAID system and other hardware error checking would find these problems. The answer is sometimes, but not necessarily. Drive manufacturers (and the figures are yet to come in for Flash drives) admit an UER (Uncorrectable Error Rate) of less than one in 10¹⁵, which on the face of it sounds impressive. Until that is you look more closely. That’s about a week’s worth of data read/writes for a disk in a data mining environment. Flash memory UER are harder to ascertain but they are bound to be in the same order. The result can be a real mess – a single data error occurring on one drive if it only happened once a week, would result in 52 errors in 12 months – on a RAID5 system that would be hundreds. That amount of error could cause untold problems in software. There are ways around this however. The ZFS fie system has a unique architecture which does not allow the accrual of errors created by RAID striping.  These are the way forward and for cloud users offers a 100% secure file storage mechanism. RAID is reliable, but it’s only 99.999999% reliable – is that enough or will you soon need a RAID data recovery?
