RIM’s BlackBerry Torch at half price

Tue, Aug 17, 2010

Post filled in: Mobile, News, Smartphones

What happens with Research in Motion? Looks like a curse hit RIM, just a few days after it’s launch, BlackBerry’s 9800 Torch price dropped to $99  on contract. Sales specialists announced that they sold only about 150,000  phones only, a number way smaller that the one RIM expected.

The cuts aren’t as dramatic as for phones like the Palm Pre Plus and Microsoft Kin series, where price drops were considered urgent attempts to prop up rapidly falling phone sales. Amazon is often liable to cut prices on phones even from launch, but it only periodically cuts prices as deeply.

Torch with BlackBerry 6.0 OS was supposed to be RIM competitor for smartphone operating system market, against Android’s rapid ascent in the top. This failure comes in addition to the international disputes with different governments about BlackBerry services security.

There is no need to despair yet , we must take into consideration  that BlackBerry’s main  market is still enterprise—and companies update hardware when they have to, not when you want them to.
