Mobile Phones, Software

GPS Phone N95
The Finish mobile constructor, has recently developed a mobile phone software that, apparently, allows data from GPS enabled phone, which in term is then analyzed and interpreted as traffic flow patterns. Don’t get to enthusiastic yet, as the whole deal is still in conceptual phase, with a demonstration recently taking place as a joint venture between Nokia, California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT), CalTrans, and Berkeley’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Each student car was issued a Nokia N95 phone with GPS and special traffic-monitoring software developed by Nokia’s Palo Alto, plus a Bluetooth headset. This all helped send data to the main receiving station, with the vehicle’s speed and location, that was soon put to good use, as the data was compiled and retransmitted back to the drivers. Similar devices have already been developed, but they are extremely expensive, while Nokia’s solution requires only a piece of software, requiring as a hardware piece just a simple GPS phone. Seeing as the market of GPS phones is getting bigger and cheaper by the moment, the Nokia developed traffic avoidance solution, might become a reality soon enough. Watch the video of the experiment over at CNET.
