Post filled in: Processors

According to Macworld, Intel is planning to reveal details for an eight-core Xeon processor next month, at the San Francisco International Solid State Circuits Conference. No details are known regarding the Xeon processor to be discussed, the program only revealing that the executives at Intel will discuss an eight-core, 16-thread Xeon processor manufactured using a 45-nanometer process. Intel’s spokesman, Nick Jacobs, declined to comment on the Xeon processor.
If the odds are right, the most likely processor to be presented is the Nehalem EP, which will be used for dual-socket servers and workstations. It is scheduled for release in the early part of 2009.
The Nehalem EP chips will use Intel’s Quick Path Interconnect (QPI), replacing the front-side bus and allowing more data to flow between the computer’s components and processors thus improving system performance.
