TerreStar prepares to launch sattelite with $300 million funding
Sat, Feb 9, 2008

Terrestar has always been a company who would rather act than talk. For example, the last thing they’ve done is to achieve an impressive $300 million in funding for its efforts. The money is coming from EchoStar and Harbinger Capital Partners and it will be used mostly for funding the launch of the TerreStar-1 “hybrid mobile satellite” (pictured above in a circa 2005 mockup).
Its role will be to power cellphones that’ll be able to use traditional terrestrial networks and fall back on satellite when there is no other signal. Their initiative is great and with the funding they’ll probably be able to accomplish it.
Furthermore, they say that they’ll be shooting for a launch by the end of this year, with Arianespace confirming that it’s able to provide the transport into space.
